How the Injury Management Process Works

Once a claim for workers compensation has been determined by the Claims Agent and a referral made for rehabilitaton and return to work assistance, the following occurs:

Typically, our Consultant will co-ordinate the injury management process by:

  • Meeting with the injured employee to conduct an initial needs assessment.
  • Visiting the workplace to interview the employer about the injury and to arrange an assessment of duties.
  • Meeting with the treating medical providers to clarify the diagnosis, treatment plan and prognosis for the injured employee.
  • Liaising with the Claims Agent to provide recommendations and obtain approval for rehabilitation and return to work services.
  • Helping to bring all of the parties together to work towards a common goal and achieve a return to work.

We are mindful at all times of the need to resolve matters as quickly as possible and to keep costs to a minimum.

Responsibilities of the Employer

  • Provide a safe working environment.
  • If a claim is to be made, all documentation (Employer Report Form, Worker Report Form and Prescribed Medical Certificate) must be sent to the Claims Agent within five business days of receipt of the forms.
  • Provide safe, suitable alternative work, and be actively involved in an injured worker's rehabilitation.
  • Keep in touch with their Claims Agent.  Until the injured worker is doing full-time normal work, notify the Agent if there is any change in type of work or hours, or if the employer is thinking of terminating the worker's employment.

Rights of the Employer

An employer can ask their Claims Agent:

  • For assistance in a worker’s rehabilitation and return to work (this is usually provided by a Rehabilitation Consultant and/or a Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist).
  • To review the weekly payments to a worker if they believe they should be stopped, reduced or increased
  • Arrange for an injured worker to attend an examination by a recognized medical expert
  • To provide copies of medical reports and request a report on an injured worker’s medical progress and incapacity for work
  • To apply for a review of decisions made about their claim
  • To take into consideration any other relevant factors.

The Rehabilitation Consultant will provide you with a copy of the WorkCover handout “A guide to the workers compensation process and safe return to work”.

In some cases, this can be provided to your employee in their own language if English is not their first language. They will also arrange for an interpreter to be present, as required.

The Rehabilitation Consultant will also answer any other questions you may have in relation to the rehabilitation and return to work process. If they are unable to answer your questions, they will seek advice or put you on to some one who can help you.  Refer to our Useful Links under the Contact Us menu for further assistance.
